Summary

14.4 million passengers* were transported on Croatian ferries in 2022 representing an increase of 16% compared to 2021 (12.4 MM). 2022 was the best year so far.

All ferry routes have shown a steady increase in transport volume since 2009 except for the year 2020, due to the effect of Covid19 pandemic. However, some routes show stagnation or decline over the period, due to various reasons – here are explanations for some of the crossings:

  • Route 633 connecting Ploce and Trpanj shows a significant drop in volume in 2022 (39 % drop in comparison with 2021) due to the opening of the Peljesac Bridge in July 2022.
  • Route 9608 connecting Korcula with Prigradica, Hvar, and Split (catamaran) shows a significant increase in the period 2014-2016 and a drop after that. The drop is due to the introduction of additional fast catamaran ferry lines that serve foot passengers and cover the same or similar routes (Split – Hvar- Korcula – Dubrovnik)
  • Route 9807 connecting Lastovo, Korcula, Polače, Sobra and Sipanska Luka with Dubrovnik (catamaran) shows stagnation over time (from 66251 in 2009 to 46267 in 2022 – a 30% decrease in volume), due to the introduction of other, more convenient seasonal fast catamaran ferry lines that serve foot passengers and cover the similar route.
  • Route 9604 connecting Lastovo with Vela Luka, (Hvar) and Split (catamaran) – stagnation due to the introduction of more convenient crossings from Dubrovnik.
  • Route 9601 connecting Milna with Stomorska, Rogac and Split shows stagnation over time due to the introduction of other seasonal fast catamaran ferry lines that serve foot passengers and cover similar routes (Milna-Split)

Note*: We included a total of 49 passenger ferry routes that are in service year-round. Some routes are not included due to a lack of complete data over the period. The seasonal routes are also not included. The confirmed figures for 2022 were released in early 2023. The figures for 2023 are expected in early 2024.
